Robert Castrignano says, "These children lived in Valognes and would frequently bring us fixings for a salad; e.g. tomatoes and lettuce. We reciprocated with sweets. They did not speak English; I relied on my pre-war French Classroom studies for communication. Instead of 'Pigeon English' it probably sounded like 'Pigeon French'. I often look at this picture and wonder whatever happened to these youngsters."
